I have a SG and my BIL has a RG. From my experience the bat wing offers much better protection with less buffeting but the RG is more stable with cross winds and offers a better ride on windy days. It's a matter of what you are looking for, a better ride on windy days or better protection from the elements.
And at speed! The fast you go, the more planted it is. I passed a line of 4 cars and an Ultra doing the speed limit (which I find unacceptable) on a two lane road . By the time I rolled past the ultra I was east bound and down hitting triple digits and the freakin bike felt like it was on rails.
I have no problems with the wind or buffeting. I have a fork baffle and the HD Tall windshield. Also a Mustang Touring seat. Never head the first word of complaint from my wife.
I bet you guys are right. The rider versus passenger comfort factor probably is a key point. Indeed, my OL is pizzed that I traded my old Road King. That big 'ol wall-sized windsail (not windshield) made her a happy camper even though it's no true fairing at all and she's not real happy on the back of the new RG.
This new puppy came with a little decorative piece of black plastic (imitation windshield - cheap for MOCO) so I put a KlockWerks 16" on it as soon I took delivery. However, she hated that one (too much side buffeting on her little noggin). Right now I've got a WV 14" and she's much better back there.
I'm still saving up $ for the lowers anyway since I already know they're a huge help. However, I'm thinking about installing an old scratched up stock RG tall shield I have in the garage just to see what difference that makes for her.
How tall are you? I'm 6" exactly, 170 lbs, and am considering the WV 14" and one of the Clearview sizes for my 2011 RGU. Comfort for me is important, comfort for my son on the back is, too. And I'm having trouble deciding which windshield to get.
I just traded my 04 EGC that I put 80,000 miles on and I have over 3000 on my new RGU and I really do not notice any difference in turbulance. I have the the $30 wind deflectors and the chrome baffle under the forks. My wife says she gets more wind then she did riding with me on the EGC. She says the RG is a lot smoother riding tho and perfers the RG even tho it is more windy. She wears a full face helmet 100% of the time.
I have a 2011 RGU, which already has the lowers. I checked out the wind deflector kit and the chrome air baffle and am considering purchasing one or the other. Are both necessary, or is one functionally better than the other? Also, will they be an issue in hot weather? It seems they would block a lot of air from reaching the engine
