winter cam project
ok...i've added all the chrome, pipes, tuner, stereo , speakers, etc. so now it must be time for cams. talked with fuelmoto and thinking about tw555 or tw6-6 cams (any imput appreciated here). and just wanting to know how hard this really is. have seen the install threads (someone did a really nice one with lots of pix and details..a link would be great!) and it looks fairly easy. my biggest concerns are (1) pushrods, (2) bearing replacement. i was told since bike has over 12k it is recommended to change bearings. what tools do i need? should i buy the hd tool (pt. #?) or k&d (pt. #?). what other tools are needed/recomended/required? do i need the tool for locking the cam drive while tightening the sprocket bolt? should i replace the tension shoe? etc.? those of you that have done this, would you do it again? any imput appreciated?

Easy. You can reuse your stock rods if you go through the rockers. Yes, change the bearings and go back in with B168's (SE/torrington). You can either use the Autozone puller as many have or you can get a decent puller/installer combo tool from Gary Beatty for under $100. You don't necessarily need the locking tool, but it's a lot easier. HD sells them now as well. I doubt if your tensioners need replacing with only 12k on the new style. Were it me, I'd go through the rockers, but that's just me.
I went through the rocker boxes last winter when I changed cams in my scoot. I used the 150 bucks I saved by not buying the SE adjustable pushrods and bought SE 1.725 rockers.
Changing cams is easily within the reach of any decent weekend mechanic. There's several accounts on the forum of guys who had never taken on anything more difficult than oil changes or brake pads previously, but were able to successfully swap their cams.

Easier with the 6gallon tanks on 08 and later than it is on 07 and earlier. The 08 and later doesn't have the external fuel line crossover. For 07 and earlier I suggest to folks to install a quick connect in the fuel line crossover to make future pulls easier.
