Default Relieving Fuel Pressure

I am in the process of changing cam tensioners. I already have the exhaust and cam cover off and according to the manual I need to relieve fuel pressure before I disconnect the fuel line. I can not pull the fuse and run the bike with no exhaust and cam cover removed so does anyone know a way to remove the line without making a huge mess? The bike has not been run in a week so I couldn't imagine there would be full pressure in the line but if someone could lend a hand I would appreciate it

Don't you just hate it when you don't read the instructions first...

Actually I only popped the cover off to inspect the tensioners but once I saw they were bad it was too late to relieve pressure. I hadn't anticipated having to pull the tank but thanks for your informative post it was a huge help

Just go ahead and remove it. By now there is no pressure.

Default relieving fuel pressure

There is no reason to relieve fuel pressure or remove gas tank to just change cam chain tensioners. the job is fairly simple to do. I would suggest going with the hydraulic setup. Just got done with mine. 47,000 miles had less than 500 miles left on them. Another thing change the oil and filter then ride 500 miles and change oil and filter again. this just makes sure all the little plastic pieces have been captured.

Having torn my own engine down, in frame, to do the 103" Stage II upgrade, which does require removing the gas tank.....

If your bike's been shut down for long enough that the engine is cool, your fuel line is de-pressurized. It will be ok to pull the fuel line.

However....

Like others have said. There's no reason to pull the tank to replace the tensioners.

Just disconnect the fitting with a rag. There won't be a mess unless you have an older model with a cross over fuel line.

There shouldn't be any pressure if fuel pump hasn't run for a week, as stated above, use a rag as a little will drip out. To those who said he doesn't have to remove tank, WTF?, unless he has adjustable pushrods or wants to cut out the old ones & install adjustables, that's the only way I know of to pull the cams, enlighten me if I'm wrong.

How do you get the lifters out without pulling the rocker boxes? I know about adjustables, but he didn't say he was using them.
