can you link where you saw that? - just did a 255 in my 103 so im curious.
That's the second time I've heard this, but not yet from someone who actually has that setup. I'd like to hear first-hand reports of this, as none of the people I know who have the HD 103 Stage II have detonation issues. None have hot-start issues either, but I do think some do and CR's may be a good idea while the work is being done. My dealer recommends having one MCR (rear cylinder), saying if it's ever needed that this will be sufficient.
Although it's an apples-and-oranges comparison, I actually added some ignition advance in the cruise range of my TC96 (9.2:1 compression), as the 255's have been less prone to detonation (none) than occurred with the stock cams. I incur it with 5° additional advance with the 255's, while 1° is all it took with the stockers. AFR's are the same at 14.5-14.6 in the cruise range.
The detonation problems with the SE255 cams in 103 motors doesn't impact everyone, and is more of a problem at sea level.

With the +4 gear it should move the closing of the intake out 4 degrees which would make the compression start at a later point thus hopefully getting rid of my detonation? As far as getting it dyno tuned....... I have absolutely no faith in any of the tuners in my area. I have been tuning witht he TTS tuner, I have my fuel set and my timing I have been retarding it to control the detonation, what else is there other than the fuel and timing?

same pistons. Run a .030 hg instead of the .045 stock one and you get 10:1

The following was a reply to my mentioning I was going with a TW-555. My Tuner also warned me of possible pinging isssues with the SE255's and steered me away from them.

I think given the quality of gas now and in the future your wise choosing the TW-555 over the 255, especially in a heavy touring bike with the 103. This past year I run the SE255 in my Trike and though the torque way down low was nice the pinging when I got a hold of crummy gas while out west was not fun. I just finished installing the TW-555 and look forward to next summer once I get it tuned in the spring.

there's no difference between the flat top pistons in the 103 limited, the flat top pistons in the police 103 motors and the flat top pistons in the stage II kit.
BTW, did the tuner say anything about the dip in the TQ curve at around 3500? I would expect those cams to peak around there, but they actually peak quite a bit later. Sometimes exhaust systems can cause a dip like this. I think the 204's may be a great option for the stock 103 motor without other mods (except Stage 1 stuff), and I also put the SE255's in that category. The latter will peak earlier and won't produce as well at the top, of course, but it's all in what you want.

I believe you, but we're right at sea level here and none of the Stage II's I'm acquainted with have detonation issues. It's not like I know of dozens of Stage II riders, but there are a few whose owners I've interrogated. It also gets hot here, and some of these bikes don't have oil coolers. Summertime in S. LA would be a nice time and place to test an engine for detonation, I would think. A cooler would be the first option I would install if I was riding it around here, especially if I was riding a Stage II or higher bike.
