Double checking before swapping handlebars
I have a 2011 FLHP RoadKing that came with 16" apes. I am going to swap these for the heritage style bars.
To do this, I need to replace the front brake line.
I have a few questions regarding this:
1)When I disconnect the front brake line fron the master cylinder, will all the brake fluid run out of the MC?
2)I don't think it will, but if so, are there any tricks I can use to stop it?
3)I do not have ABS brakes, so will bleeding be the same as in earlier years, ie:
- Connect hose from bleeder into jar
- Pump brake handle
- Open bleeder while holding handle
- Close bleeder
- Repeat until air removed
- Once finished, tie rubber band over brake handle to hold it closed over night (I learned this last step on these forums)
Thanks
However, I had seen the apes and wanted to see how they would work for me.
This RK I have now came with the 16" apes (together with a bunch of other stuff I had wanted) and it looked like a good opportunity to check them out.
Well, much as I wanted things to work, these apes just did not feel comfortable to me. A couple things:
1) My hands were just below my shoulders and they (my shoulders), would ache after my short 10 mile commute to work. I tried pulling them back, but that put my hands to close to me
2) The mechanics with turning were completely different. For example, in a left turn, you push down on the left bar and the right hand kind of follows allong.
With the apes, it felt more like I was pulling the left bar down. Also, my right hand would go too high for my comfort.
I am only 5'9" tall and they just were not for me.
In their defense, they are gorgeous bars, and a lot of people are happy with them
I wish you lived somewhere close to Salt Lake. It would make a fun weekend project to swap these bars
