Hey guys, I have a '11 limited and was looking at a stage 1 upgrade. I have come to understand that the cat is in the headpipe on my bike and with the price of after-market headpipes I wondered if it was really that hard to clear the cat out of the stock headpipe.
Thanks ahead of time.
There are several threads on cat removal. Try the search feature. I bought an 09 headpipe from a forum member to put on my 2010 Limited, but am considering V&H True Duals, as I think they allow a better sound.
I cut my pipe in half where the cat is (large collector aera) and used a 1/2" drill bit to drill around the cat as close to the pipe as possible and then use an old chisel to cut out the rest. I then used a die grinder to clean up the pipe. May not be required but I scratched a line down the pipe before I cut it so I would have something to line up the halves since I was sending the pipe out for welding.
Cost me $20 for the welding and then I had the pipe ceramic coated for $115. My total cost is $135.
Beware removing the cat material is a dirty job and you may want to wear a filter mask to protect your lungs.
