Thanks Kevin... I'll forego a similar test of my own and gladly go with your results. When it comes to fuel, I'd rather fill up early. Good to know it actually does hold 6 gallons.

5.5 is all I have been able to put in mine. Its probably a built in safety to try and help you not to run out of gas.

Ran it out of gas on purpose (had a 1 qt bottle of fuel w/ me); coasted into a gas station. Took 6.0 gal up to the bottom of the neck. About 80 mi. after the light came on, it was dry. Center fuel cap tanks might not get as much in, compared to right side caps.

Well done and thanks for pushing forwards the frontiers of tank capacity research!

The fuel gauge on my FLHTK goes from full to 1/2 really, really fast. I only have 200 miles on it and not enough time to work out details on the mileage. It's been mostly raining since I bought it a few weeks ago so looking forward to seeing what it will do. I plan to also carry a little gas to see what empty really looks like. If you've never run out of gas, you don't want to. Unless you are a teenager who's expected to be tight on cash, it's a painfully embarrassing experience, car or bike. I had one of the 2 fuel sensors in my Corvette fail a few years ago causing a bad reading. I was in sight of the gas pump and it quit. Ever had to push a Corvette in public?? A guy stopped in a truck and was kind enough to help me get up the ever so slight hill. He only smiled a little... while I was watching.

I was way out in the boonies when I noticed my indicator was on and the gauge told me I had 30 miles left.
I had at least 20 miles to go so I should have been almost on fumes when I got to the gas station.
Same thing. It took just under 5 gallons.

Seems like there should be a fix for this. I know sending units have variation in the signal but to drop that fast is unusual. In the 200 miles on my bike, I've topped off the gas 3 times "just to be sure" until I get to know it. Anyone have any ideas or experience with this?

I have the same result. With under 40 miles showing until empty, the most I have ever got in was 4.8.

I don't know if it doesn't fill fully, draw out fully or is just not accurate. Much of my use of the Ultra is out west and southwest where it can be a long way to the next station.

I have limited my ride to a max of 180 before filling. At that point the light either has come on or is about to.

Most of the time I only need about 4 gallons to top off the tank. But I get fuel when it is convenient for me, not when the gauge tells me I need it. I a few times I have put over 5 in.
In the tank fuel pumps are there because the gas keeps them cool. I haven't heard of a problem on a Harley but on many cars and trucks if you run below 1/3 tank or so often you will wear out the fuel pump sooner.

I read somewhere once that American vehicle manufactures think Americans like a "cushion" of gas so when they hit the E mark, they have time to get gas. In Europe when you hit E, you're out of gas because they say the Europeans like it accurate. Im sure this principle applies to bikes as well.
