Default Dual Disc/Rotor question

I'm curious about the front dual disc set up on my 1998 Road King. Can I go to a single front rotor on this and what would be involved? If so,which side could I loose? I don't think the weight of the bike is much different than a Heritage and they only use a single rotor.

you could, but i would recommend moving to a 13" rotor. Usually the right side is removed.

I took the right side rotor off my SG. I have not yet gone to a 13" on the left side, but may do that in the spring. I did lose some braking power, but the difference is not huge.

I went to a left side only on my 04 flhtc last yr.I didnot loose any braking.I used a Hawg halters 6 piston caliper with the stock rotor. You will gain a bit more (10%) with the 13 in rotor.

Normal is to keep the left side rotor. Just be aware that the master cylinder has a different bore between the dual and single rotors. To do it right, you should change the master cylinder.

There seem to be a couple of posts about this...

Can't help but ask what the reasoning is. Looks? Weight loss? Cost of maintenance? An attempt at deminishing brake dust? Why would you want less braking power?

No I'm not dissin anyone's choice, I just don't understand...

It only has to do with looks, period.I'll do a little more researce on here. And ,no i wouldn't want less braking power, but like I said, the softail models(heritage, custom, eyc)only have 1 font rotor and I've noticed alot of the cstom Road King's and others areonly using 1 rotor.

Upgrade to a 6 piston caliper on the left side and a master cylinder from a heritage and you'll look better and stop better than before, despite what some self proclaimed armchair brake experts on here will tell you.

you may actually improve the bikes handling manners with this. the reason being, it's quite a bit less unsprung weight. that rotor and caliper have to weigh several pounds. you'll also have less rotating mass which also helps. there's a lot to consider but these are two of the advantages i can think of, other than aesthetics.

I wonder why HD hasn't thought of this?
