I installed a new Cateye LED module "after buying a lift from Harbor Freight" and it seems at least part of my problem is solved.

The stop, turn, tail functions are all operating as the should.

A short ride and a few startups show no signs of the security light or engine light coming on.

Only time will tell on the odometer... I will keep an eye on it next time I ride it and be sure to post my results.

My gut says the faulty tail light caused the jumpy odometer but I can't say how.....

Don't matter how.
Very good news that the problems is (likely) solved. Congrats on a speedy fix!

The ecm is a strange beast. Our place is not to question it, we are to obey. LOL

What are the odds of that,.... Yeowzer!

Maybe you are carrying too much radiation next to the speedometer!

I have the opposite problem. Sometimes the Odo/trip will wipe off the last ride when I cycle the ignition. I can be sitting in the garage, zero the trip, cycle the ignition, and the last reading will magically reappear. Funny thing is only the combo speedo/tach will do it(i've tried 2 of them), original "speedo only" doesn't. I'm guessing a bad ground somewhere in the tach connection.

Glad you got it fixed. I was going to suggest backing into your driveway to see if the miles were subtracted ......

Also, is someone else responsible for working on particle decelerators?

Not had any problem like that yet...lol Did have that happen on a road tractor a few years back, found loose ground wires causing the problem. It was funny you could smack the speedo head and be doing 60mph for 5 miles with the engine off, setting still in the shop. Just hope it was the light for you,and is fixed now.

I am new to the HD scene and looking for some tips on this oh-so-strange problem.

Here is a little background in case it is related.
-Upon picking up the bike we realized the rear stop-turn-tail light was not working "aftermarket." The dealer and I did some quick troubleshooting and determined the LED pcb itself was bad "probably"

-I have not yet replaced this light assembly, and have noticed some strange things.
----1. The security light randomly comes on.
----2. The check engine light randomly comes on.

Now I think those lights are coming on because of the faulty tail light, correct me if I am wrong. I guess I won't know for sure until I replace the light.

Heres the real problem......

It seems that the miles have been racking up faster than I have actually been riding, I have suspected since day one that the spedometer/odometer is not accurate.

Come to find out it skips and counts on its own!!!
Pulling in my driveway today I witnessed it go from 15073 to 15080 while traveling 100 feet, then I stopped and watched it continue to count to 15090 without even moving!!!!

I didn't even know this was possible and really have no idea what could be causing that to happen.

Suggestions???
Man, aren't all the electronic gadgets and computer gizmos they pile on these bikes just great?!?

Now it depreciates without even having to be ridden.

Seriously though, I'd get that fixed ASAP!

Maybe it was the lift that fixed it.
