I have 4" bassani mufflers witthe true duals. It deffinetly is a deeper sound but I'm not sure how well like it. It has a sound all of it own. My buddy says it sounds like a V8 when following me. I have to admitt the more I ride it the better its starting to sound to me. I know if you do the Stage one and true duals which does away with the Cat even the stock mufflers have a much better sound to them.
Depends what you are referrencing as far as 2.5" vs 4", are you referring to a baffle size? to a muffler body?

initially I was refering to the size of the muffler body - didn't realize that I also have to take the baffle size into consideration - so, what about baffle size (and muffler body)...how does it affect sound/volume - or do they differ too much to give a general answer?
Dandy - i am really struggling between get TD's or swapping out my V&H basic slip-ons for either cfr's or maybe samson rolling thunders (which come in different size pipes thus prompting my original post) - not looking to gain in HP or torque, just want a above medium loud sound with a great HD sound.
I've got 4" Rineharts vs my V&H's (in the pic below).....the Riney's are way louder.....but it may just be how the baffles are packed. I'm wondering whether or not I will get hassled by Johnny Law in the future. I stay off the gas when I pass a police car around here.
if your talking about baffles its a crap shoot.. depends on the baffle design, differant on evry pipe.. a larger pipe is going to be louder because the sound echos more inside a big pipe..then if you have a muff, again depends on design..run open 4",evryone will know your coming.a stock muff is 4",but its 30"long all baffle, exhaust is acually blowing thru a 7/8". tube
Just wondering how the size affects the loudness or the sound? Thanks.
I believe the large muffler body of a 4" muffler gives a deeper sound. I had V&H ovals on my 07 and now have Monster Rounds on my 11. The rounds are much deeper but still fairly loud.
this is an easy one. imagine a saxaphone. an e-flat alto sax is much smaller than a baritone sax. the baritone is much deeper in tone than the alto sax, only because the baritone sax has a much larger body, longer and much bigger around. it's all about volume, the amount of cubic inches inside of the tube, the deeper the sound will be. likely the sound will resonate while it travels through the tube as well, affecting the sound.
