Default Changing brakes pads.....odd ?

I changed my pads and when taking out the old I found this:

The right side pads were both installed where the pin goes thru the pad.

On the left side the pads were "flipped" meaning only one pad had the pin going thru it, the other was reversed.

Now....I dont have a service manual yet but I assumed this was improperly installed from the factory, Why would one side have the retaining pin going thru both pads and the other (ABS side) have it only going thru one of the pads? The pad was reversed meaning the pin hole was at the lower part of the caliper.

Am I missing something or was I correct when I reinstalled them in putting both sides the same?

Any experience or help in this?

Thanks.

Just happen to have my brand new H-D Service manual in front of me. It says:"Always install a new pad pin (provided in brake pad service kit) whenever brake pads are replaced" Step 15 on page 1-39 also states, "Install new pad pin and tighten to 75-102 in-lbs". It sounds like you did the right thing. Wow this service manual is awesome. Hope this was some help to you. Happy New Year!

Thank you Sir! I installed new (different brand) pads for my new PM rotors, they are supposed to work better on the PM rotors.

After reading your post I think I will get a set of pins...they are soft and I can see why they recommend them being replaced.

It is disturbing that one of the pads were installed improperly from the factory...my bike has less than 500 miles on it.

Thanks again
