Question 1999 Road King Classic

Experts,

I would appreciate some advice. I found a 1999 Road King in my area for 9500. It has 16,000 miles, one owner, etc. All sounds great and I assume the owner has all of the service records.

What are ups and downs of this year model? I assume this is a carb and not FI engine. If the bike checks out at the mechanic, what major maintenance items do I need to watch for? Cam tensioner upgrade maybe?

Sorry for all the questions. I am a former metric owner looking to make the move up, but I don't have a lot of money. This bike has been around on CL for a while so I could get it for under the 9500 asking price.

Thanks

I have a 99 RKC that has EFI, so this one may also. I love mine...it's been extremely reliable and never an issue. The things you'll need to look at are:

- Check the cam chain tensioners at 20,000. I would upgrade to the hydraulic unit at that time.
- Front forlk fluid should be changed if not already done. A good time to upgrade to chrome front end if you like chrome.
- Check your axles for corrosion/galling and ensure anti-sieze is applied when it goes back together.
- Fuel filter been changed? If not, you will want to do that.

If you can do your own maintenance then ownership is a lot cheaper than having a dealer or indy do it.

Pics/location?

Good luck with your decision!

I also have a 99 Road King Classic and its fuel injected. With only 16,000 miles I doubt its in too bad of shape. You could probably run another 15,000 before cam tensioners are a problem. The EFI is the MM version not the Delphi. Alot of people hate the MM EFI but i dont have a problem with it. It does its job. Tons better than a carb in my book. They are nice when you get in the mountains and thing stays running like a top. A Power Commander is a must if you plan on changing cams or pipes. If he says hes added this or that to the motor make sure he shows you documentation. Its easy to lie about whats under the covers.

How long has it been sitting? Check the tires for cracking, also find out whether the owner ever replaced them. The original rear should have been replaced at about 10,000 and the front is due to be replaced right about now (if its the original). I bought a used 2002 RKC in 2005 and though I gave it a thorough look-over there were still a couple parts needed replacing. 16k is low miles on the bike...hope you enjoy it.

I had a '99 Roadking Classic, road it for 10 plus years. Put over 85,000 miles on her.
(But I changed the oil in all three holes every 3000 miles) Was still running strong when I sold her in 2009. Never checked, or had a problem with cam chain tensioner. The Cam bearings (if I remember right) were replaced under a factory recall when the bike was new. I had a Vance and Hines Fuel Pac and a high flow A/C etc.
The bike had terrible brakes. (compared to my new Limited)
I think $9500 is a little high, Besides it's winter time I'd offer $8000 The low mileage really doesn't mean much as far as used bikes price go. When you trade em in the dealers don't even care what the mileage is or what extras you have on em.
