Sound is subjective.....I had the D&D Boss Fat Cat on my 2009 RG. The sound at idle was excellent. The sound going down the road was very tinny and it sounded like an old truck. I saw MAYBE one other bike with a D&D around here. Let me tell ya, when I fired that thing up it would turn heads. It sounded mean at idle and it was LOUD....If you want a pipe that SCREAMS and performs well, then take a look at the D&D. That sucker was just way too loud and tinny sounding for me. It was definitely an attention gitter! haha.
On my last two bikes, I had the Thunderheader. I LOVED the thunderheader. It had a very deep tone and distinct sound.
Now on my next bike it will either be the Thunderheader or the Bassani Road Rage. The Road Rage is an excellent pipe also....
They're a little pricey but I'm partial to my RB Racing Pro Stock Spyder. Not too loud, (a little louder than my Rinehart Slip Ons). Torque and top end charge compared to my previous setup was amazing.
For those of you running the V&H Pro Pipe HO..........are you using that with a stock 88 or 96? 2.25" pipe is kinda large for a motor of that size.
Pro Pipe users...........are your pipes the Blue Proof models or standard? Any bluing or yellowing issues on the standard model?
How about the Kerker or Cobra pipes? They look ok and are priced right but do they compare in performance and sound with the others? Have never heard them.
Kerker has probably been around as long as the other's all put together.
If I got one and could bear to get rid of my 2-1-2's which I probably should do for the sake of performance but won't as I like the look of them, I would go with the Kerker, as everybody else has the V&H..much as everybody has the Rinehart slip ons that I have now. LOLOL!!
Seriously though, I had a Kerker on my softail and it was great..
I'll give you one more option to consider and thats the BUB 7 - 2 into 1. Put it on my 2010 Road Glide. Looks good, sounds good and a 25% increase in HP and torque.
I have had the V&H HI-Output Pro Pipe and the Thunder Header for my Dyna.
The HO Pro Pipe gives good power, but is flawed in design. Its press fit leaks badly on the back of your leg. It is a NO in my book. After a few hundred miles you will be able to see carbon where the header meets the muffler. Right behind your right heal. Everyone I have seen does this, and I have even pointed it out to Vance and Hines. The Pro Pipe and the HO Pro Pipe come from different divisions of V&H, and this was told to me by V&H management. Vance and Hines fix? Use RTV. Gimme a break.
The Thunder Header is awesome. I just had a issue after 8000 miles with a single note it put into my full face helmet. So I am taking a break from it, and put on the stock pipes with Cycle Shack mufflers. This so I could go from quite to loud in about 15 minutes.
I will be putting my TH back on if it doesn't sell. I am thinking of not to sell after all. It is a great pipe.
The rtv is to keep the carbon from coming out the slip joint, it's the carbon that seals the slip joint. That is exactly how RB racing and others mfgr's recommend to seal the slip joint.
Im thinking of ditching my V&H true dual head pipes and Rush mufflers for a 2into1. Ive owned Thunderheaders before .....not much in the looks department but they really work good and sound good. Heard R&Rs sound crappy but perform well and also look good. I like the V&H Pro Pipes looks but not sure about their performance or sound. Not too many around here run 2into1s......those that do.......run Thunderheaders.
The chrome "Pro" Pipe and the "HO Pro" Pipe are not the same thing, and like I said are NOT made by the same division of Vance and Hines, and are NOT the same exhaust.
If you want a press fit clamp that will leak in about 500 miles. Waste your money, but don't say I didn't warn you.
i am not trying to argue with you, but i looked at eh V & H site, and their pro pipe HO is a one piece design. there is no fitting. you can see the welds. there is no press fit sections anywhere on it. so, i am wondering..... when did you buy your pipe, and where did you buy it from. because if they advertise with pictures, that it is a one piece unit, and then sell you something else, that is pretty jacked up.
