Well, yes, it's only January but I'm already thinking Spring. I was wondering if some of you could chime in. I had my 1000 service and oil change done in about August and put on about 800 miles before I put my RK to bed for the winter in November. If all goes as planned I should be out riding again by late March?. Never really know around here in the Mid-West but my question is do you guys think I should change the oil or just wait until I hit about the 3K mark on the current oil in the bike?
I usually change my oil before I put her away for the winter. No sense letting it sit there with all the contaminants in it, plus, as soon as I get a nice day, I'm ready to go.
Whenever I'm going to let a vehicle sit for a few months or more, I always change the oil before hand.
Your best time for changeing oil is before storage, but with 800 mi. since the last change, I wouldn't worrry. Some guys like to change out engine oil every 3,000 mi. I use Mobile 1 20w50 for v-twin and change out 4,000 mi. or a little more.
I ride pretty much year round and change my oil every 5000 miles. Had almost 60,000 miles on my road king and 20,000 on my ultra with no issues. I use either Harley synthetic or amsoil.
Fresh oil is a lot less expensive than any engine damage but I seriously doubt you would have any problems continuing on until next scheduled maintenance.
Do not bother with an oil change after so few miles. Some of the guys on here get very **** about these kinds of things. Just change it again after you put a total of say 5,000 miles on it, or before next winter, whichever comes first.
No need to change it in my opinion after the few months of storage for that reason.
But then on the other hand, it sounds like you have about 1800 miles total (1,000 mile service + 800 since) on the bike. Personally I like to change my oil a bit more often during the first few thousand miles while it is breaking in. You'll find more metal chips and such in the oil during these early stages.
So... changing the oil wouldn't be a bad idea... Not for the "storage" reason, but rather for the "breaking in" reason.
I did my first oil change around 500 miles, then again at 1400 miles. I'm going to 5,000 miles before the next change and then 5,000 intervals after that.
Everybody has their own ideas on oils and change intervals so the best advice is simply do whatever you feel comfortable with as long as it meets or exceeds the factory requirements.
