Screamin eagle compensator
I have an 2009 ultra and just had the compensator replaced under warranty with the screamin eagle compensator. This was at no cost to me and the bike is still under the original factory warranty. I have only been able to ride it from the dealer to home about 20 miles as there is snow and salt on the roads here. I will post later as to any improvement when I get some miles on the bike. The dealership did not hesitate to replace the compensator when I brought it in. I thought I would pass this on for any of you with a 2009 touring bike.
Never thought of this as a problem until recently.. Just turned over 25K and now and then starting to get the dreaded bang when starting sure gonna try and see if can't do this before the Factory Warranty expires in April ..
I have the BANG when starting and thought that was a NORMAL noise ? Then after reading in here about the problem I went to the dealer. First one ( My Dealer) said he would not do any thing except replace it with the same one? I told him I would pay the difference between the 2 compensators but he said NO! So I went to another down the road and he said no problem as long as I pay the difference between the 2? So that is what is on the schedule in 2 weeks they will do the work. The BEST is I called HD and customer service acted like I was the Plague ? No Sir we do not have that problem and NEVER had !! I do not have any thing in my rule book to cover what you are talking about ?? What an A-swipe !! I hate them !!
If any of you go to get this done make sure you tell them that it is making a lot of noise when you let the clutch out, and worse if your riding two up . This problem is also hard on the starter. They covered the replacement at no cost to me.
Here's a thread that mud wrote up on this topc with some nice pictures. May as well replace that chain tensioner in there too while you're at it.

I have an 09 Street Glide and mine was replaced with no cost to me. Unfortunately i haven't gotten to put many miles on due to the snow here in Hot Atlanta.

Is there a test one can perform to verify the compensator issue? I have an 09 Ultra Classic and just recently on 4 or 5 occasions it made a loud bang when I started it up. I haven't noticed any other symptoms. It seems to me it has only made the noise when the bike was warm but I may be mistaken about this. My warranty runs out April 1st and I really wasn't planning on purchasing extended warranty. To get it to the dealer now would be a big problem as we are in the dead of winter with lots of snow and cold. How expensive is it have the compensator changed out? I wonder if all else fails, and I can't get the bike to the dealer before April 1, would it be cheaper to pay for the repair or pay for extended warranty?

My compensator was making excessive noise when letting out the clutch in first gear especially going up a hill from dead start. Also it was making the banging sound sometimes when starting the bike. The cost to have this done is just under $500 including parts and labor if you were to pay to have it done. If I were you I would call my dealer and Tell them you are having problems as I described earlier in this thread and see what they say. Hopefully they will do this under warranty. Good luck
