The Service dept at Big St Charles HD is awesome. You'll notice a big difference with the SE Compensator.

The dealership did not hesitate to replace the compensator when I brought it in. I thought I would pass this on for any of you with a 2009 touring bike.
I have them coming to my house so they can pick-up my bike and then they will drop it off the same way. I can not ride it in this weather, will cost me $150 , not bad ?
I had a 2009 SG that had a really bad starting problem. The guys at Big St Charles first had me take the PCV off and the problem continued. They replaced the starter drive, checked the compensator bolt and then replaced the compensator with the SE part at no cost to me. They treated me so well that I traded in the 2009 and bought my 2011 SESG. I saw that you were from St Charles and I live in St Peters. Put 2 and 2 together, Big St Charles is the best dealer in our area both in sales and service.

I took my 08 SG in telling them about a load banging on start up. Told them I thought it might be the compensator and was hoping they would put the SE compensator on. They said they would check it out. Called me the next day saying it was fixed, said they tightened up the nut as it was loose and that all is well. Not happy about this and feel it should be replaced. I have extended warranty on the bike which covered the repair cost so I'm not sure why they did not want to replace it.
there are a lot of dealers who are replacing the weak stock compensator with the s.e. unit. it's harleys way of quietly admitting that the stock compensator isn't suitable for the newer motors and is too weak to do its job. find the right dealer, and they'll take care of you. good luck finding the good dealer, they're out there though.

been thinking on this myself, and Big St.Charles HD is a whole lot better then it was when Schultz had it for sure. i got my 10 ultra from DOC'S got a better deal there, have you ever been there for service or heard any good things about DOC'S, don't mean to hijack the thread. this is my first new Harley and I'm trying to get some info on shops around or area. thanks! bob
I have the BANG when starting and thought that was a NORMAL noise ? !!
Mine does it most of the time too. Is that the compensator going out, or just the metal hitting inside of the compensator?
Also heard though that you have to cut grooves into the SE Comp as the way there are designd they do not get lubricated...
Check it out, there are threads on this.. on this site.
I have replaced the compensator on my last two bikes. I started a thread a while ago about how some are getting this replaced under warranty and others are not. The inconsistancy of the MOCO on this issue flames my butt. You can wipe your a$$ with the Harley warranty, they just won't admit they have a problem with the compensator.
