Luckily, i have three dealers to choose from in the immediate area; Annapolis, Hughesville and Indian Head not to mention D.C. and Virginia if i want to go a little further. I'll have to check with them and see if i can talk one of them into it. I get such a bang when i start the bike (2010 Ultra) and when i drop it into first it bangs so loud it sounds like its coming apart. Thanks for all the discussion.
there are a lot of dealers who are replacing the weak stock compensator with the s.e. unit. it's harleys way of quietly admitting that the stock compensator isn't suitable for the newer motors and is too weak to do its job. find the right dealer, and they'll take care of you. good luck finding the good dealer, they're out there though.
I keep getting the "Hmmm" we don't hear a any noise that is not normal" comment, and "These are big motors that generate a lot of noise" comments from my dealer. I have been in 3 times to let them listen to the noise it makes when starting and at 2500 rpm.
Maybe we should start a list of dealers by state that are willing to acknowledge a problem with the compensators and are willing to cover the replacement under warranty? It would give a us a place to get these replaced under warranty+ the difference in cost for the SE unit.
It would also make a proper list to look when shopping for your next bike. Just a thought.
I took my 2010 UL in for it's 5K service last month. The dealer called me and said there was a leak and they needed to replace a gasket. I asked them to check the Compensator while their in there. They said it was out of spec enough to replace, so I payed the $100 dollar differance for the SE Compensator. When I started it up when I picked it up I couldn't beleive how quite it was! It was a night and day differance! It also seems much smoother all around. I didn't realize the vibration or noise because it was like that from day one when I picked it up brand new in June. This is my first Harley, I just thought it was normal. If it wasn't for this forum I would not have even thought to have them check it. I would highly recommend having it done, it's a BIG improvement.
I had mine dyno'd at Doc's. Friendly staff and the place was clean. They got me in and out early and i have been satisfied with the work. I have several dealers in my area but was told by my indie Doc's was the place to go.
