BAL 1 here. Very bright--looks like cop at nite. Very easy to install. Hardest part was unplugging the stocker. Get it-you'll like it. On bright setting it is obnoxious. It should work on the worst drivers.
I can't imagine needing the $450 light. The 4 LED version should be more than bright enough.
I've got the BAL-3S (smoked laydown style) on my Street Glide. It's VERY bright - to the point that riding buddies don't want to be behind me at night, and I don't blame them. I've got the run setting at medium, and brake at bright with a couple of flashes before the light stays on steady. These lights are the best/brightest I've seen by far.
I have the regular version very happy with it, bright and I can change the pattern if I want to or change the intensity, well made. Plug and play completly does not interfere with anything, well worth the money IMHO.
Got a link? Is the only difference between the bal 1 and 2 the bulb?
Figure out what bulb format your bike uses. For instance the 1157 socket type is common in most tail lights. Then just do a search on "1157 led" on Ebay. The more LEDs the bulb contains the brigher it will be. Also check out http://www.superbrightleds.com/ (although they are more pricey than ebay).
I just installed a BAL3-S (smoked lens, 4 LED). Have it set to medium intensity and two 3-pulse flashes before solid display. The smoked lens matches my signal lenses... man, this sucker is bright!
Has anyone who has run one for awhile seen any need to keep the magnet with you?
Each and every comment explains how they see the "LIGHT" with no pun intended. I can't think of a better way to adding a little more secure feeling that the blind idiot behind me just might see me! I have the new light sitting right here next to the computer. I can't wait for temperatures above Zero so I can get out in the garage and installl the light. I have a friend that bought one last fall and the last couple of rides we've had was short of a conversation piece from every one. All I can say it it works! The set up and install is great and easy to do. I can't wait.... IF there were any questions, I'm hoping to put them to rest. You won't regret it. 23 settings, first 9 that's 1 -2 - 3 with intensity settings of 1 -2- 3 of flash action settings. WOW, now you have 23 others with the same level of intensity. What kind of price can you put on safety. I can't, and the rider on the back is most important as well. Plus it's american made. I guess the 21 years I served paid off. Model BAL - 1R (that's without the window). And a 5 year warranty! Hey ride hard, far, and safe. See you on the return flip.

Yes and no regarding the more lights the brighter. The BAL-3S that I have contains 4 LED bulbs. A lot has to do with the reflector. I say this with experience. I ordered a 48 LED 1157 bulb from customdynamics for my 2001 Vulcan Meanstreak. Yes the light was bright and I was very happy with the performance of the bulb. However because the reflector was designed for a bulb that threw light out in almost every direction it did not work properly as a reflector with the 1157 base LED cluster. There was no light throwing from the back of the panel. Had there been LED's on the back as well it would have been crazy bright and the distance of the light would have increased.
Also not all LED's are created equal. If I'm not mistaken the BAL uses SUPER-LED technology. There are also CREE type and several others. They are just getting bright and brighter is time goes on. I have CREE LED flashlights that throw better the 225 lumens and light whole rooms from a light that has a front diameter not much bigger the a quarter.
Again not arguing that more LED's are brighter, it's just that reflector design has a lot to do with how much light the blind cage driver behind you sees.
