Default Used Cams

I have seen a lot of used cams being sold in the classified section. Is it wise to purchase used cams? Are there any concerns about how they are worn in one engine, then changed to another? Thanks for the info.

If the cam journals and lobes show no wear, they're just as good to use as a new one.

I just bought a set of Andrews 26H used...not installed yet but that was a mild concern....I understand that a component mates with another after a while but the flip side to that is the journal in the bike already has wear anyway so it will eventually match ot mate itself also. Plus if your bike didn't have any issues before and oiled well the lubrication should prevent and problems...I ain't not master mechanic so somebody chime in....Like Rick said..a lot of guys have done it. I haven't heard of any major issues yet.

Question...If any cam is used, even in the best of condition, won't it show wear? What is acceptable? Not being a smart *** here, just trying to educate myself. The Andrews cams i bought show some signs of wear but not what i would call excessive. they were used for 1 year. Couldn't these be polished to be made to look like new?

You take your fingernail and rub across the journal. If it feels smooth with no grooves cut in, it has no wear.

Personally, I wouldn't put a used cam in my bike. If you decide to go that way though you should at least get a competent machinist to use a micrometer to check the bearing surfaces for excessive wear. A couple of thousandths of wear is not always visible to the naked eye, and looking for grooves doesn't always tell the entire story. If a bearing fit is bad, you can do a lot of harm to your engine in a very short time. Just my .02

Well the inners ride on the B168 rollers so should have some forgiveness there the outer i agree... The wear i see is on the lobe wich should be normal...I see absolutely no visible wear on the bearing area in mine just on the top part of the lobe...

OP i didn't mean to Highjack your thread but i hope some of these questions help you also.
