Well, I have a little over 20,000 on my 2006 Street Glide and came up with a few extra dollars. So, I decided to take care of the dreaded tensioner worries and have gear driven cams installed. First off, I am in no way going to do it myself so I went to a local popular Indy who has done work for me before.
I will get the S&S 510G cam kit, adjustable pushrods, all new bearings, oil pump cleaned and checked, map upload and oil change and all labor included for $1200.
Does this sound like a decent deal for $1200? Indy is very reputable.
He said this was a upgrade for all around driving both solo and two-up. And that with my SE Pro performance slip-ons, SE heavy Breather and PCIII it should really wake up my otherwise stock 88. I am not looking to make it a rocket, just to strengthen my engine and make it run a tad bit better!
Any thoughts or reviews?
Thanks in advance....

IMHO, there are better cams for a "cam only" upgrade but that's your call. I thnk the price is about right. Gear drive hardware, cams, bearings, gaskets and pushrods will run just under $800. Figure 4 hours labor at $75/hour adds $300; pretty close to $1200. Be advised that a "map upload" is a poor excuse for a tune an you can upload maps from the DJ site wihtout paying someone to do it. "Oil pump cleaned and checked" that's a bogus item and not something you should pay for. The tech should check the oil pump as part of cam R/R. You need dyno time to get the engine tuned. Make sure "all bearings" includes Torrington B148 inner cam bearings.
I'm sure he'll check the crank run-out before install, but on an 06, i'd go with the hydraulic upgrade with the 510's. The kit comes with a new heavy duty pump so all you need is the cam bearings. Less worry about run-out and will still have the wake up factor. I did gear drive in mine, but my run-out was .0003 so i'm safe.
Bodean46's advice is something to consider. I assumed you have done the homework and opted for gears vs the hydraulic tensioner/roller chain setup. The tech should definitely check crank runout and confirm that TIR is less than .003" before you oder the gear drive kit. If the TIR is less than .003", gears will work and won't be noisy if setup right. The hydraulic tensioner/roller chain setup uses the '07 cam plate with the new pump which, on its own merit, makes the upgrade worthwhile. If you haven't considered this option, you should.
You will need conversion cams with the new OEM cam plate, so you need to decide which way to bounce before you order cams. The only thing I don't like about the new cam plate is that the outer cam journals ride in parent material bores in the cam plate; no outer cam bearings. However, they are holding up.
