What I found with my Ohlins is that the damping control is far superior to anything I have experienced before. So travel becomes less important, because bumps and thumps are absorbed by the design of the damping devices inside them. They are helped by having springs matched to your requirements, so the shocks have optimum travel once the bike is loaded.

These things work so well because they are designed and made on a different level of quality than other shocks. After a year or so of riding on mine I still find I brace if I am about to hit a pothole, then come out of it marvelling how well the shocks worked - and we DID NOT bottom out!

Thumbs up Ohlins

I went with the 13.25" Ohlins for clearance issues and I am still amazed at how well my bike handles for what it is.

Hardly noticeable tucked in there.
I will definately be getting a pair.

I went with the: #3:1, "307 mm no length adjustment 12" Only stroke: 2 5/8"/67mm This shock is the lowest you can go without hitting the fender (3/16" clearance fully compressed)"

The bike sits just as before, but now rides like a dream, with the stock shocks I just could not get the things to stop bottoming out, increasing the pressure simply made things bouncy but did not stop the bottoming out.

Since fitting the OHLINS it is near impossible to get the bike to bottom out, in addition everything is simply smoothed out, they seem to take out all the ripples in the road.

Performance wise they just simply make the tyre stick to the road translating in a more confident ride and resulting increases in corner speeds = FUN!

Howard takes all your weight details and riding style in order to build the shocks to match you and the bike, I have found no need to tweak the settings from those set-up by Howard. 45minutes with the Spanners and they were on.

Just waiting for Howard to perfect the Ohlin front end to match!

Thanks again guys for your photos and feedback.
I like the ride height of my FLHX and think I will also go with the 12" version.
From what I hear, there is still plenty of shock travel and nobody is experiencing bottoming out.

I'm impressed!

You won't be sorry. Just take your time, ride, and adjust and you'll be a "happy camper"

Did you find that your bike sits up higher with these than the previous shocks, or?

That's what Howard recommended for me too was the 3-3's 13.25's for my SG, but the stockers on the SG I believe are 11 3/4, so that being what it is, we are talking 1 1/2 inches higher which doesn't sound like a lot, but it very well could be...as far as flat footing it is concerned...

I don't have an SG, but my experienced with the #3-3s is that because they are correctly set up they don't settle as much as stock shocks, especially when fully loaded. So they might seem a little taller than stock 13" shocks while riding. They are however adjustable for height by a small amount, as the bottom eyelet can be screwed in. I plan doing that before the riding season here starts, having ridden them all last season.

As for flat footing I have never been able to do that! It is far more important to me to have the best ride quality and cornering clearance. Seems to me it tends to be taller riders who are more fussy about flat footing. We short-asses just get on with it....
