First thing before I left the dealer, pulled off the heel shifter!
Once home, different windshield.
New Grips.
Seat back.
Changed oil/filter to Synthetic oil ASAP.
Changed air filter ASAP.
Check tire pressure.
Check belt tightness.
Check wheel bearings.
Check brake pad thickness.
Replace headlight with HD high performance bulb(Big difference riding at night!)
Misc stuff I had stripped off my 09 Ultra since the dealer said they werent worth anything on a trade. One thing you can really get your bucks out of in comfort is the riders backrest. And spend the little extra on the adjustible one. Allows you to change your seating position while riding.
On my 2007 FLHX, I changed the fuel door to a push button one, the passenger pegs to boards, added a cruise control, and installed the hardware for a quick release tour pack. That was before I drove it for the first time. I then bought a Mustang seat and am in the process of changing to 12.5" Chubbys or 10" PYO with Avon Grips.
2010 FLTRX, already had chrome front and stage one from dealer. First noticible mods; changed windshield, added driving lights and changed my front headlights to HID, installed hawgwired amp and J&M 7.25' speakers, changed handlebars to carlini bag drag, and have a coastal moto 21' front wheel, have few more mods and will definetly be doing more.
Bought my first HD in Sept '10 with 26,500 on it.
1. installed Bassani exhaust
2. removed the tour pac and installed a quick disconnect and a hidden antenna.
3. replaced the seat with a mustang road glide seat.
4. cut the stock windshield down to 6 inches. (i've since replaced it with a new 4 inch smoked.)
5. removed the clear coat from the fork sliders and polished them to a mirror finish.
All the while, I have removed parts and cleaned and polished. It hadn't had a good cleaning in forever.
The best modification you can do, you already have done and that is to subscribe to this forum. The knowledge base is so great and the guys are so helpful, I believe that if you simply do a search of the forum you could build any model HD from scratch without having to look at the manual.
The second best (and others would argue the first best) would be to buy the manual.
Two mods done at once when I got it home. Pulled the heel shifter and tilted the stock bars up. If I were to start all over on a new bike, then the first mod would be forward controls and tilt up the stock bars.
My first mods were to install the DIY garage door opener, then the DIY radio shack siren/alarm. I have since completed quite a few other mods, but I think the DIY ones gave me the most satisfaction.
