Default 2007 FLHRS Questions

I just moved to Key West and I want to start doing my own maintenence. My owners manual and service manual are being shipped here, but I figure you all can help me before they get here. Where are the drain plugs for the Crankcase, Tranny, and primary? Also, do you reccomend the same fluid in all 3? If so, which brand and weight?

Thanks,

Justin

Underneath...three 5/8-inch head with 1/4-inch hex. You can either use a wrench or a hex key socket for R&R. The closest to the front is your oil, the rear is transmission and the primary is easy to spot: under the primary housing toward the rear.

All of the pugs have O-rings and I always replace them. They'll come in the service kit - Part Number: 17369-06.

The proper torque on these plugs is 25-75 Inch-Pounds (which ain't that tight really). Do not over-torque them or you'll screw the O-rings up. Don't ask me how I know this...

Forgot to say: Thanks for your service Justin.

As for oil, that's up to you. I use Harley brand petro-fluids in mine...

The trans plug is on the right side of the pan & facing down, the oil plug is on the left side facing forward, & the primary plug is at the lowest point of the primary cover facing down. Oil has been the topic of much discussion, I've used Mobil one for years & 150K & have had excellent results, I've used 15/50 car formula, but now use 20/50 Vtwin because it's supposed to hold viscosity better & figure for a few extra $$ it's worth it, Advanceauto & a Auotzone usually carry it or can order it. I use Redline shockproof in the trans, it seems to shift smoother & run quieter. You can use almost any oil in the primary, it's just in there to keep things cool & do a little lubrication, I personally use HD Formula+ there, again only a few $$ more & oil is cheap maintenance on a bike, Some swear by regular Dino oil, but I think that synthetics have been proven to stand up to heat much better & have a longer life. Any good brand will do as long as you do regular service intervals.
