removing broken (well nut?) insert in inner faring
One of the inserts that holds the outer to inner faring has broken on Electra glide. About 1/2 half of the insert came out with the screw that holds the windshield, the other half seems to have stuck inside the hole. Tried to get out the broken half that was left inside with small needle nose, but no luck. Also tried very small screw driver to try and pry it out...No Luck. Any ideas? Need to insert a new one, but it won't have room to seat fully and go all the way in. Any ideas?
Thanks
If it's a wellnut just push it on into the fairing & insert a new one from the outside. If it won't push in, or it's not a wellnut, you'll have to remove the fairing.
Okay, here's what I did. The old one was cross-threaded... needed new one, but couldn't get old one out. With outer fairing off, I simply screwed in a bolt and drove that thing in as far is it would go. Removed bolt and placed new brass insert in. Of course, didn't seat all the way. Used a Dremel cutting wheel to cut the part that stuck out so it was flush. Replaced outer fairing, inserted bolt... works like a charm. I've had the outer fairing on and off many times since, no problems. Of course, YMMV.
Get you a bolt bout an inch long and a nut 3/8, slide the nut over the bolt and screw it in. Tighten screw while holding nut from spinning and the broke off piece will jack right out.
When the broke piece gets flush to the nut you need to stop and get a bigger nut, spacer whatever as long as the broke piece is smaller than the spacer you're using.
Not tryin to hijack the thread but are yall talking about the nut that is in the inner fairing that the bolts that go through the outer fairing and windshield screw into? cause i got a problem with one of mine, can't get one of the bolts out cause the nut in the inner fairing just spins. just makin sure before i start tryin the fixes yall are suggesting
It is the OEM stock brass insert that self treads into the plastic inner faring hole. Don't really know if you call that a wellnut or not.
No, that's not a wellnut. The brass inserts anchor in the plastic, & you need to be careful not to break the plastic gettin' the old one out.
Well nuts are a nut mounted in a rubber mold that looks a little like a top hat. As you tighten a bolt in the nut it pulls toward the bolt & swells the rubber too large to pull back through the mounting hole.
Old style had em in my 08 are a knurled insert, that is the inside threaded and the outside knurled and pressed in.
New style maybe 09 and up, the nut is threaded on the inside for the screw and the nut has threads on the outside that screw into the plastic fairing.
If you have one slipping, its prolly the old style. Take all the bolts out, on the one that slips slide something thin and stiff between the inner and outer and turn the screw and pry at the same time. Replace with new style
