The front brake on my '01 Road King has been very "soft" since I bought the bike. The brakes would only make contact when the brake lever was almost againt my other fingers. I have been reading about other riders experiencing the same annoying problem and thought that I would share my experience. I have been talking to 3 different Harley dealers and none of them could really tell me what the fix would be.
1. I checked the brake system for "air", "low fluid level", "worn brake pads" etc. and everything checked out.
2. I noticed that when I would pull the brake lever, the pistons in the calipers would only move once the lever was almost agains my finders.
3. I took both calipers off and pumped the brakes multiple times and then forced the pistons back.
4. I repeated this process a few times and removed most of the dirt/brake dust from the pistons
Once I put the calipers back and pumped the brakes a few times, they were as tight as if they were new!!!!
Glad you posted that........I was wondering how to clean 'em up. Had the dealership do that for me once before........30 bucks. Anyone switch to another pad and have better results, i.e. no dust build-up?
