For the allen bolt that you need to break free with the extended allen...tighten it first (about 1/4-1/2 turn) and then try and loosen it. This trick worked for me where I did not need an impact wrench to loosen it.
I did mine this winter. Pretty straight forward. Dont toss your old springs and dampers........i ebayed mine....got like $30 for em. Im anxious to see how they ride. Its still colder than a witches tit here.

Thanks. Is this a one man job or will I need a second set of hands?

One man is all that you should need. More hands wouldn't hurt mostly putting the top cap back on setting the preload. I used a ratchet strap as an aid.
Installed a set of monotubes on my 05 FLHTI tonight.MY buddy and I did the install in 4hrs start to finish, pretty straight forward. Now for a test ride to see how they perform.
Just put new chrome sliders & Progressive monotubes in my '09 RG. The tips here are eight on target....wish I had seen them. Never thought of splitting the PVC pipe trick....unsplit pipe isn't quite big enough. It's a pretty easy swap. Getting that brass 6mm screw out of the bottom of the slider was a little tough....it's REALLY in there! Roads are still too gritty here - can't wait to try'em out. Good luck!
Use an impact gun like the book says and it comes off with ease. When doing monotubes dont overfill the oil, youre only using about 10 oz instead of almost a whole bottle. Use the old seal on top of the new one to drive it on so you dont damage the new one, and be sure you have the seal pointed in the right direction or you will be leaking oil. Anyone still need a monotube set? PM me, Im selling mine only has about 1000 miles on them.
All the above tips are great. Only do one side at a time, so that you have something to look at to compare with. ( to get it back together correctly)
Getting the correct amount of oil back in, is not easy.
Read the directions 2 or 3 times and do the job.
It will be a piece of slippery cake.
