Is there any realistic emergency flat repair possible on bikes with spoke wheels? I don't care if the emergency fix gunks up the inside of the wheel and needs a bunch of cleaning later. I'm just looking for something I can put in the saddlebag of my 2010 RKC that will get me home if I pick up a nail.
Consider a small 12 volt compressor..Slime makes a small one or you can get another pump from autopart store and remove plastic cover and make it smaller..I have had to use this for a flat before.
A bottle of slime would also assist with the compressor. The good thing about a compressor is that air is unlimited.. The c02 cartridge method and the fix of flat limit you to one time use. The use of the compressor can allow you to fill-up a few times and maybe get to safety.
If tube has small puncture OK but if it is torn then all deals are off and call the truck. If you do decide on a compressor and slime consider being a good friend to others and carry a few plugs and the tool to install them. Helped several individuals in the past. http://www.webbikeworld.com/Motorcyc...cles/air-pump/
I've always used RIDE-ON it's not as messy as the SLIME, in my tubeless tires, but since i have the tube tires now i read there claim to fame on the tube tire's here is what they claim ?? not really sure myself.
Ride-On TPS will eliminate 85-95% of your flats in tubeless tires from objects up to 1/4" (1/8” for tube tires) that penetrate the contact area of your tire. Ride-On’s efficiency in tube tires is reduced to 55-65% since puncturing objects often tear the tube. It is impossible for a tire sealant to seal a tear. It is vital to remove the puncturing object immediately from a tire containing a tube to prevent further damage that can result in tearing the tube
Last September I was SOL on two counts; first, I had tubed tires, and second, it was a Sunday so all shops were closed. Thanks to an old friend I hadn't seen in 30 years or we'd have been triple screwed (no hotels in town).
Generally, an oriental tube will "star-crack", or split, and a Euro tube is better rubber and will just puncture and not loose pressure all at once. You have a better chance of Fix-a-flat working. That being said, I haven't had a flat on the road for over 25 years. I inspect my rims every tire change (several times per year) and don't let the tread get too thin. Now I have AAA, a cell phone, and good karma.
Your best bet. It isn't simple anymore, (not that it ever was). A cell phone and roadside assistance is your best friend sometimes, at least where laced wheels and a flat are concerned.
I'm kinda surprised that one of the more high-end wheel manufacturers doesn't make a billet mag wheel that looks like it's a laced wheel.
I bet they'd sell more of them than they knew what to do with. There's a lot of people that love the look of spokes but prefer the versatility of a mag wheel.
This coming from a guy that has no real idea on how difficult something like that would be to manufacture.
I run tubed tires on a dual sports bike. I don't put to many miles on it every year. So I make sure to change the tube out once a year. I would figure on a Harley I would have to take to a shop. Ill be putting a plug kit in my saddle bag tonight. I have a long ride tomorrow. Till I can pick up a small compressor ill just carry a mountain bike pump. Ben
