Yup, the ambient air temp cools the cylinders and oil tank. on cool days, the temp gauge may not even get off the low reading. You ought to see what happens to the temp on a rainy day.

Mine varies between 200-220 degrees dependant upon the ambient temp. I run Amsoil too so that should help some. Sleepeagle is right about the temp in the rain.

Been using an oil temp gauge for years and wait until you ride in 100+ temps and see what the gauge does. The reason I started to use synthetic oil was seeing the temp at about 280 after cruising on the freeway at about 85 mph. One thing I can tell you is what really heats the oil up is higher rpm's and stop and go traffic. You would think that traveling at 80 mph would put enough air across the engine to cool it off, NOT! I find that 3000 rpm's and more on my00 Standard really start to heat things up when the temperatures are above 90 degrees. If think my servie manual said normal operating temp of a twin cam was 215 degrees F.

That's when you add a cooler.

yes normal operating temp is 230, that is why "230" is @ the 12 oclock position on the gauge
