Default Installed Chrome Sliders

I found a guy on eBay who does an exchange for sliders. Price is $190 with shipping and a $90 core charge.

A couple of tips I picked up installing sliders:

1) I *had* to use an impact driver to remove the 6mm allen nut on the bottom left side. I was able to break the right side free with a handtool, but no freakin' way the left side was coming out. I went to Harbor Freight and got a set of 6" metric allen wrenches seated in 3/8" sockets. Those, combined with my impact driver worked great.

2) Some people have made due using a pvc tube to seat the bushing and the seal. I ordered a metal install tool from Georges garage and that worked awesome. I wouldn't recommend trying the install without something to seat that bushing.

3) You need a *BIG* wrench to get the caps off. While I was at Harbor Freight I got a massive adjustable wrench and that did the trick.

4) The book says to pull the forks off the bike and use an HD tool to secure the fork in your vice. I don't have a vice or the HD tool, so to remove the 'flat' which is under the cap, I just slid the fork down in the mount and re-tightened the clamp which let me put the wrench on the flat to loosen it up.

I also picked up some chrome spacers for the front wheel, but I'm not putting them on until my tins come back from paint.

Here are pics of the new sliders. Not a very good pic, but the bike is still on the lift and I'm too damn tired to move it back out for a better pic

PS I also added the French headlamp ring tonight too. You can see it in the pic above. Kind of weird that it mounts over the existing trim ring, but it fits fine and looks great. Recesses the headlamp back a bit.

I do it without pulling the fork tubes from the triple tree. I just remove the bushing at the bottom of the dampener, slide the parts off the bottom and reinstall the same way. I use a couple of wooden dowels to push the seals into place. I use two large screw drivers on either side of the washer above the upper bushing and give it a good push. The bushing seats everytime. I used to do the job by pullling the legs, till an Indy buddy showed me how to do it like I said above.

I couldn't get the bushing re-seated and aligned properly without the tool. When I tried without the tool the fok was binding in the slider. Since the cap has to come off anyway to add fork oil, it didn't take much add'l effort to remove them all together.

Really looks great - just changed mine out also - mine was the right side that the allen bolt would not come out on, even went out and bought an air ratchet (good excuse) but no deal. impact driver did the trick.

I went with the full front end chrome kit from Harley (Zanottis) - which by the way includes everything.... except the replacement allen screws that they tell you in the directions you need to replace - so off to the dealer - right side one was pretty messed up by the time I got it out.

Anyway - bike looks great - looking formward to final pictures with the new tins

PITA job, but well worth it to get rid of the stock sliders!

Good job; looks great. I've had the forks off once, and it's that job that keeps me from going with the chrome sliders on my bike.
