Wow, thanks for the heads up on this part. I was going to install this until I read this thread. Think I'll go for the old style light bar and install Custom Dynamics LED lights in it.

Default LED King Tour-Pak Brake/Turn/Tail Lamp Kit Part Number 67932-11 Installation Notes

I received this kit (plus the side lights) for Christmas and installed yesterday. After reading the OP, I was very careful tightening the nuts on the back wall of the Tour Pak. Additional notes as follows:
  1. The instructions that came with the kit were incorrect as to the sizes of the holes that should be drilled into the back wall (to accomodate the wonky studs that the OP wrote about). The instructions said to drill a .513" hole, but the template said .25". The correct size is .25" and I would have been mucho irritated if I had followed the instructions, as the nuts would have pulled right through those oversized holes and I would have ruined a $1,000 Tour Pak. I see that when you click on intructions on the H-D website, this mistake has been rectified. Still, they are shipping old stock with the incorrect instructions. Inconceivable.
  2. The instructions said to install the metal side plates (referenced earlier in this thread) if using antennae on the Tour Pak. Assume this is to counteract the strain of wind pressing against the long antennae, so I left this out as I use a Stubby antenna (4" long, so virtually no aero resistance).
  3. The instructions reference a spacer terminal to be installed in the empty spot on the Molex connection, but no such spacer was included in the kit. As this connection is inside the Tour Pak, I just filled the empty hole with dielectric grease and skipped the spacer.
  4. The instructions called for silicone sealant on the six studs on the back wall only, but I used marine-grade silicone sealant on every hole in the Tour Pak (including the holes where the side lights are screwed on).
  5. I eperienced brain fade and put the connector on the end of the lead (the part that goes out through the front wall and under the seat) on backward (was holding the part upside down as I assembled). If you do this, use a medium safety pin to push the plastic lock away from the hole in the pin (you can work from the front or the back) and this will release the pin so you can take it apart and reasemble it correctly.
  6. I used dielectric grease on every connection.
  7. My kit had obviously sat in a warm warehouse for months; the surround was dark gray in color, rather than black. I used Turtle Wax Renew Rx Trim Restorer (same stuff I use on my fairing interior) to polish it back to its original deep Charcoal (nearly black).
  8. Rather than try to force the lead out through the existing grommet in the front wall of the Tour Pak, I drilled a new 1/2" hole in the same spot on the right side. The kit comes with a grommet, but it requires a hole larger than any bit I had, so, on both the interior and the exterior, I applied a doughnut of marine silicone sealant around the lead, and allowed it to harden overnight before operating the bike; the lead already has a fairly robust sheath on it, so, between that and the sealant, I am not worried about it chaffing through.
  9. I checked everything (that is how I discovered the bass-ackward terminal assembly) before using the zip ties to secure the lead to the Tour Pak leg and the frame of the bike.
  10. Even though my scoot is an FLHTC (no CB antenna), I installed the antenna feet on both sides of the surround, as they provide two additional very robust points of attachment and I didn't like the looks of the "empty" mount with just a plug in it. I am sticking a Stubby antenna on both sides, even though only one will be functional. Hey ... if the AM/FM antenna ever stops working for some reason, I will be carrying a spare.

That's it. Except for the bonehead error with the terminal assembly, a fairly uneventful installation. Still, I find it hard to believe that Harley shipped a kit with instructions so obviously in error. Makes me wonder how many Tour Packs they have had to replace for owners who placed blind faith in the instructions.

Tom

I bought a third party kit off of E-bay (I think) a few years ago, opened the box, put it aside, life happened and now I'm ready to resurrect this project. Glad I did because there is a lot of useful info in this thread spanning 4 years!!! So now I'm looking at the product and it certainly looks like it was manufactured in the same factory in China (of course, including local Chinese newspaper as packing material) as the Harley branded unit. Everything I have, including indents on metal brackets are exactly the same as what I see in the Harley part list and images. One HUGE problem (and I'm just noticing since I didn't check when I received)..... no drilling template !!!! I seriously considered just trashing this thing and buying the HD product, but after reading the comments here, I think I'll take my chances, but I need the template. Anyone have a template that is still usable????

Mine is Chrome, BTW. Probably the primary reason I want to give it a shot before going to HD

Honestly, not to rain on anyone's parade, but, when I installed the LED light kit on my tourpak I didn't run into any problems or quality issues. I won't argue that the directions included with the kit suck, but, the actual mounting on the tourpak was pretty straight forward. I would suggest that any new installer would try out the electrical connections BEFORE seating them into the molex connector. ALSO, I would recommend custom painting the assembly BEFORE installation.

I took the paper from a heavy brown paper bag and forced it over each pin making a hole. If the hole needed to be "moved" after the paper was against the light assembly, I forced a piece of masking tape over the same pin, slid it down the pin and pressed it onto the paper. That located the hole in the correct location. While the paper was smoothly against the light assembly, I traced the outline of the light assembly onto the paper. Then I cut the paper to the shape outlined. Now I was able to place the template against the tour pack, locate it properly, and drill the holes. CAUTION! Mine was also the chromey import and it caused static in my radio. IF YOU HAVE A RADIO, try some temporary hook up wires and see if yours causes static or not BEFORE YOU DRILL THE HOLES. Wish I had been given that warning. Now I have the Brightass BAL 1 tail light and that seems to keep the tailgaters well back, no lights on the tourpak.
