Hay guys I need to take the back tire of a friends street glide to have a new tire put on. Neather me or the owner have ever messed with a belt drive before. I have had chains and he has had shaft. So I woundered if there is some good directions some were on how to take it off and how to reinstall and adjust the belt. Thanks for the help

Get a manual. it will save you both a lot of grief on install. Proper placement of bushings, rear wheel alignment and belt tension requirements. There are good threads on this forum on the subject fif you do the search, but the 60 you spend on the book will safe a potential wreck with imporper installation techiques. Need a good MC jack to do it safely.

It's pretty simple actually. Remove the brake caliper, remove the axle nut and then tap the axle out. The belt tension information is in the owners manual to adjust the deflection. You need to torque the rear axle nut. It's easier also if you remove the muffler on that side. Not really any different than a chain.

Bear in mind the belt has some tension on it, unlike a chain, you need to back off the belt-side tensioner so you can get the axle out. I normally only do that side and count the number of turns, so I can tighten back up after rebuilding. That gets very close to being properly aligned and the tension correct.

The factory manual is well worth getting. In fact my wife collected her lovely new Merlot SuperLow yesterday and as a treat bought me the service manual for it. Wasn't that just great of her?!

No need to remove the caliper, you can leave it attached to the mounting bracket.

True, makes it easier though. I'm not sure what year they went with the cam adjusters but they make the process pretty easy. You don't have to adjust each side independently with the cam adjusters, they are welded to the axle.

Another handy " how to " guide is the Fix My Hog dvd. It has basic maintenance like fairing removal, rear tire removal, lubes, etc. Does not replace the service manual though.

You can take the bolts out of the muffler hangers and get the axle out w/o taking the mufflers off by pushing down on the left one a little. Be carefull not to scratch the mufflers and take note of how the spacers are in there. Sometimes the mufflers are tough to get off. I just use two big crescent wrenches to get the belt tighten to about 3/8 inch play and then tighten the axle nut by feel to 100 ft. lbs. It helps to have someone hold the left side wrench so the adjustment stays. Also turn the right wrench forward towards front of bike vs. pulling back to tighten helps keep that side cam adjuster stay in place. If you want to torque the nut (95-105 ft. lbs.) you will have to pull the right muffler or get an adapter wrench. I'm sure you don't need to be told but JIC check the brake linnings. I get a kick out of every answer on here is to get a manual, some things aren't rocket science.
