I usually like to a lot of the work on my cars and motor cycles. Brought in the 2011 RKC for the 1000 mile maintenance and along with, also brought in my own oil: Mobil 1 20W-50, Redline Primary and Redline Shockproof Tranny.
The mechanic 'caught' a 'squishyness' in the ABS brake system and did a complete system bleed and double-check.
Had I not brought it in, I probably would have not given the brakes a second thought as they felt 'ok' to me.
Being that it was the first maintenance, I wanted to 'get it on the books' regarding my two year warranty.
YMMV... however, it was a good move (for me) and worth the dollars IMHO.
I am far from having a 1000 miles on the SG since its still friggin winter here in Minne-froz-ta! Like i stated in the thread i started earlier "hard to find neutral" this is my first new bike, always owned used stuff before. I was wondering if it is critical to bring the bike in for the 1000 mile service. From what i understand, all they basically do is change the oil. I cant see paying a hundreds of dollars for a oil change! I'm quite competent mechanically and have worked on all my bikes in the past. Does not bringing it in to the dealer for the 1000 mile service void the warranty? I figured i'd change the oil myself at 1000 miles and buy the oil at the dealership so that it is documented and then i'd probably bring it in for the 5000 mile service. any thoughts?
Just had my 1000 mile service done last Saturday. I called the HD shop and asked for a price for the 1K service with me doing all the fluid changes. They quoted $79 so I brought it in. When done, they told me everything was fine except my rear tire pressure was a little low. When I payed the bill, they charged me $39. Cheapest visit to the Harley shop I've ever had.
Buy yourself a HD Service Manual. Just use a good trans fluid. there are many out there. Redline ShockProof is what I run & it will help with your netural problem. Also some more break in. Good luck.
