Exactly and I would be upset that they did not call before they stripped my bike down and I had a chance to see what the actual damage was. If they screwed up my plans as they have done yours, I would not be very pleasant to deal with.

Common courtesy to at least call you. But at least they are handling it.

I,too, feel you should have been called/involved immediately... it's good they they are "taking care" of it, but it should have been repaired/replaced on YOUR terms, not theirs. Depending on the damage, I probably wouldn't have let them repaint it but, but would have had them get a new tank. (although the chance of that tank being a repaint is pretty good,,, the tank on my brand new two tone rootbeer '09 RK was a repainted purple tank).

If someone backs into your car in a parking lot they don't get to have it towed off and repaired without your knowledge, do they? That's exactly what has happened here.

They owe you for your downtime.

Good luck!

If you don't need the bike then thank 'em for gettin' it taken care of & don't worry about it till you get it back & can compare the paint. If you need the bike have 'em put one of their tanks on it so you can ride till they get yours repaired. Then thank 'em for taken' care of the problem.

The good thing is they are taking care of it. Honest mistakes happen, and its unfair to expect to hit the "lottery" out of an honest mistake. Just check the repair when they say its done and make sure its good, probably not that big of deal.

Personally, I would not have wanted to be notified while I was gone that something had happened. It would have made me a nervous wreck just wondering how bad it was. At least you had an enjoyable trip.

Be patient and resonable, good dealers do the right thing for the right reasons. Hopefully, they are charging the mechanic back the cost of the repair work as a reminder on being careful.

Accidents do happen. I can't imagine a Qualified Mechanic working on a bike without covering area's around where he's working. It depends on how long the repainting will take and how bad you want the bike. You could probably get a rental to use. I would ask where the damage occurred. When it's finished, I would take it outside in the sunlight to inspect it before I accepted the bike. If the paint doesn't match, it will hurt the value and resale.

I would want a new tank. Had a rim damaged when putting a tire on my last bike, they called me to come and look at it and decide what I wanted new rim, or do some horse trading. Tire was free, momma got a shirt and the next service was on the house. It was only a small scuff and I might not have even noticed it. They did the right thing as far as I'm concerned.
