Default 88 faster then a 103 ?

I purchased an 06 s.g. a couple months back, it is an 88 c.i. And carburated. I noticed immediately it is much faster then my 09 stock dyna I traded in on it. This bike has open breather, pipes, and jetted to match. I assume any necessary down load has been done, it runs perfect. Today I rode, then raced a 2011 road glide with the 103. My 88 is much faster. Now I wonder if my bike has stage 2, (cams) or if the 103's are just slow. What's your thoughts

The stock 103s are slugs. You need to free up the breathing to gain some uumph.

Turn your 88 back to bone stock, then ask the question. What your looking at now is a modified 88 vs a stock Dyna and a stock RG. I don't doubt the 88 is quicker. I wouldn't doubt that just about anything from probably a shovel on up with pipes, air intake, and some type of fuel distribution work (carb or EFI tuning) would be quicker than any bone stock big twin.

I've owned a F.I. 2006 RKC with the 88. true duals and PCIII/ heavy breather. I now have a stock 2011 103. 103 has much more seat of the pants torque.

I'm sure a modded EVO would smoke a stock 88 too. From Harleys own literature the 07 and newer 96ci stroker motor has 18% more torque than the 88. The 103 I believe bumped the 96" flywheel torque from 92 to 102.

Well the difference in the bore between 88 and a 103 is .125 or an 1/8th" to break it down further the 103 is 41 sheets of paper bigger so we are not talking a ton bigger here. The trick is the 103 has a stroke of 4.375 where the 88 has a stroke of 4.00. So the 103 would have a lot more torque in the hole but in a "drag race" the 88 with the open A/C and pipes would produce more raw HP then the 1/8th" bigger bore of the 103. The formula to figure out CID is bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x number of cylinders
