Can someone please tell me what i need to replace. I cant get answer from HD when i try and describe the issue. From what ive read, symptoms may include bad clutch drive, and possible sylonoid needs to be replaced?..in the 1st part of the video, i have the drive gear completely outward linked in the teeth of the ring gear..and im able to spin the shaft a bit b4 it grabs like it should..and it also seems there is A LOT of play in general..its enuff to make the little gear sit atop the ring gear without engaging in the groves to turn the belt...thus causing it to cause shards to chip off the teeth of the big ring gear....the bike started occasionally not starting few days ago.. it started making the free spin noise then banging real hard as is catches..so i decided to look inside and this is what i found...Hoping someone else has been thru this and can tell me what part i need to ask HD for so i can get back on the road....thanks guys.
Dude, don't hit your star button anymore unless you want to destroy that flywheel.
I'd yank the starter off and replace it or at the very least tear it apart and see what's gone bad with it, no way should it have all that slop. I have never messed with a starter off a bike, but if it's anything like a car starter I'd say it's shot.
LOL>..ya, the flywheel (clutch basket) needs to be replaced..there is alot of teeth ground down and a piece in the prime cover was rubbing on teeth as well...Found all this out lastnite...bike is new to me and started fine for 1st few days..then this started just few days back..havent rode it since noise started.....IF the starter is/was bad, wouldnt it not turn over?..as far as the slop in the drive gear, is there an internal berring or bushing that keeps it from being so sloppy?....Sorry, trying to educate myself and do it by process of elimination...
it would seem that the starter would be ok..but the components that feed off the starter turning, would be where my problem may be...help needed on any other thoughts you guys may have..
thats what the consensus seems to be with a few people now..thanks...so 2nd part of the noticed issue: i have a 66 tooth ring gear and 11 tooth pinion gear...should it be 9 tooth instead of 11????...or is that combo ok?...everything i read seems to be 66/9 combo..what benefit would 11 have?..
An 11 tooth vs. 9 would make your starter turn your engine over faster therefore start easier but would put more of a load on your starter and battery to do so.
+1 on what wrench says .... does the bushing in the outer primary look worn out or even there??? when starter kicks out, the shaft is to be suported in the bushing in the cover
