If you are gonna do it, I say do it right and get an amplified two speaker system. I've been gathing info for a couple months and have decided on the Hog Tunes 5x7 speakers with amp, which is in the $300 - $350 price range. Gonna pick up a set next month for my RGC.
Upgrading the factory speakers to better speakers may make them play louder, but what you want is no distrotion at the louder levels. Precisely why you need an amp, especially at freeway speeds.
Hog tunes is a great system they have a great Amp and Speaker kit for the Batwing and Fixed fairings. It will improve sound clarity and volume. Also when you upgrade you might want to consider the Hog Tunes Tweeter Pod it looks great and really is a great sound improvement to any system for a small cost. http://www.rideshack.com/Hogtunes-s/367.htm
The other system that really rocks is Biketronics Titan XL Hertz speakers. There is a large price difference but they manufacture top of the line motorcycle sound and we guarantee it. Here is a link to the Titan Amp and speaker kit. http://www.rideshack.com/6-1-2-TITAN.../4405-0215.htm
I hope this helps. Please give us a call if you have any questions.
My buddy has the BOOM speakers in his Street Glide, I can ride behind him and listen to his music clearly and he is running the V&H Pro Pipe (this sound level is 3 bike lengths behind him).
I tried the j&m and did not like them. installed the hog tunes and later installed the 2 channel amp..........all i can say is wow. I also changed the head unit to an alpine just for the record. A secret to get the most out of your speakers...Get a box of windshield caulk from the local napa store. after the speaker is installed use it (the caulk) to fill any and all air graps where the speakers mount up. This creates a true seal between the front and back of the speaker. This condition will allow the speaker to sound it's best....jmtc
