I know of no shortcuts for primary oil changes. My '06 manual says it should be filled up to the spring with the bike level and the only way that can be done is through the derby cover. I have re-used derby gaskets 1-2 times with no leakage issues.
You may be able to measure the amount you refill making sure it is up to the spring and then use that amount from then on. But removing the derby to inspect is a good habit to have.

I've been using the same gasket since 2009 and no leaks. Been off properly 8 times now.Wipe the gasket with some clean oil prior to installing it, torque the screws to to proper torque and you should be fine.
