Default The Day Has Arrived!

After putting it off all winter, the day for the bike to go get the cam tensioners checked and replaced has arrived. I am hearing noises I haven't heard before and believe it is coming from the cam area. Got an appointment this morning, will see what they look like after 75,000+ miles. Haven' decided what I will replace them with, either go back stock or gear drive. Depends on the cost and time down. Weather is suppose to be lousy for the next several days.

75,000+ miles on your original tensioners?!? Wow!

I hope all is okay because it would have been better to have them checked before new noises started.

I'm crossing my fingers for you!

Mine were fine after 50K. Yours will likely need replacing after 75. I figure I'll get another 20 out of mine. Either way they will have to pull your cam plate, but sounds like you are ready for that anyway.

Just do the gear drive and get it over, you'll be glad you did. I just had this done myself.

Just got home, spent over 3 hrs with the indy that is doing the upgrade for me. Was a little more expensive than I thought, but he is good and since it's local any problems will be taken care of. Here is a pic of the outer tensioner, didn't look that worn, until I compared it to a replacement one. Almost gone, couldn't see the inner real clear, but it was more worn from what I could see. Gear upgrade with new cams, bearing, pushrods, etc. 74,8334.9 miles on odometer. Will be finished next week, so now time to order the fuel moto package and get ready for some riding. When upgrading cams, what oil do you run to break them in?

Assuming that the lifters are hydraulic rollers and you're just replacing cams and the associated hardware, there should be no need for a special break in procedure or special oil. However, I'd still run some cheap dino oil through it for a couple of hundred miles and then change it just to flush any contaminants that may have gotten into the engine while it was opened up.

Got a call from the indy shop and the run out on my bike exceeds the recommended one. So guess it hydraulics tensioners and 510 cams. Any suggestions on cams for mostly riding 2 up and will most likely use fuelmoto mufflers/a/c and tuner.

If you're going to be dealing with FuelMoto for the stage 1 goodies, I'd suggest getting the answers to your cam question straight from Jamie or Keith. They are both very knowledgable and great to work with. Just explain your needs to them (be honest about it) and they'll point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the suggestion, sent Jamie an email this evening. Now has anyone installed the Andrews Hydraulic tensioner kit with cams? It appears to be the same kit as Herko sells, just wondering which is better or are they about the same, since made up of HD parts, etc.
