Fuel Filter
On my 07 Softail the kit comes with the filter, one hose, 2 clamps and an O ring. You replace the hose from the filter to the pump. I did not do the hose to the check valve. Read more on my thread about fuel filter change.
I just changed the filter ('08) I am having a hell of a time getting the assembly back in the tank. (Did anyone else have to shed blood?) It seems no matter how I angle it it gets hung up on the pressure regulator on the end of the fuel filter shell, and the hoses in the tank?
Any recommendations?

I will keep you informed Sickbagger - I'm taking a break for the night and go at it in the morning.
DPete those pictures were very helpful and gave me the confidence to do it. Everything went good for the first time doing this, except when I tried to slide the assembly back into the tank. I made a Blunt Object tool but the PVC that I used is too soft or something and wouldn't work. I used a wrench extension and it worked fine.
I changed the filter without disconnecting the fuel lines and electrical plugs. The service manual did not really say if you were supposed to take the whole thing out to just replace the filter. And I don't recall what others did except that DPete picts show the whole thing out. I was able to pull it out enough to access the retaining clip and disconnect the shell and reassemble. I just can't get it back in. The pressure regulator hangs up where the fuel lines connect inside the tank. If the pressure regulator wasn't there it would slip right in.
I am thinking that maybe when I pulled it out the fuel lines inside the tank shifted and that is making it hard to put in back in. I am afraid to use too much force because it may cause the fuel lines to rub if it is not in it's happy place.
Fuel filter @ 22k miles

Also, I took off the ignition switch to make it easier to get at the front dash mount hex bolt and somehow lost the spring. I mean it disappeared - It hit the floor and bong, it was gone. I even moved things out of the garage and swept the floor and no go. So if anyone sees my spring let me know

I like DPete's blunt object (pcv pipe) for removing the lock ring. I purchased the JIMS Tool tank lock ring @ $80....... works though. My filter was nasty also when I took it out. A buddy of mine forgot about his fuel filter change out and the bike reminded him while he was stuck along side the road waiting for a tow.

That is the black hole syndrome. There are mini black holes scattered about and every once in a while something will fall into one and will be gone forever. Probably slipped through to a parallel universe.
Me and a buddy are about to change ours, hope it goes well.
