On my 2010 Limited the owner's manual states not to use the lighter as a power source, but I see guys use them all the time. What are the pros and cons of doing this? Thanks in advance for any input!

Most of us believe the only reason they say that, is for your safety.
A standard cigarette lighter adapter plug will hit the side of the fuel tank when you turn the bars full left.
There would also be a wire that would not be completely secure like most factory original wires are.
As far the actual electrical part of it, just about anything you would plug into that socket (GPS, MP3 Player, etc) would draw less current than a lighter would.
I am using my lighter socket for a power source.
But I have one of these plugged into instead of the lighter adapter.
It is flush with the fairing, and does not hit the tank. http://www.amazon.com/Powerjolt-Dual.../dp/B0042B9U8Q

I believe it would be so people don't use a device mounted on the outlet directly and the possible amperage draw...

The Road Glide manual says not to use it too.... no issue with it hitting the tank....
I think it's because of the design of the contacts in the hole. I tried a cell phone charger in it, and if the adapter moved at all, it would lose power. I had to jiggle the adapter to get a good contact.
The heated grips are on the same circuit. I had an adapter "(long one) that kept popping out and I would push it in and eventually blew the fuse. My heated grips were no longer working and it was the fuse. I have since purchase the one made by Griffin as it sits in there secure and is flush.
