Another noob question, but honest... I couldn't find a thread that already discussed it!
I throw the kill switch to "On", then select ignition.....sometimes I get a full display of all the lights and the speedo goes to max and back down, other times....all I get is the "check engine" light which goes out and I hit the start button.
Why two different displays? Is this an glitch or gremlin I need to track down?
She runs great and I hope everyone got as great a ride today as I did, the weather and roads were fantastic here in western NC!
Sorry, is flashing the ECM something that requires special equipment?
Not 100% sure, but I believe it is, the bike was still under warranty, I took it to the dealer and explained the problem, and that's the answer I was given. Also sometimes while riding all my instruments would go dead until I stopped and turned the bike off and restarted it again. It took the dealer less than 10 minutes to fix the problem.

If you want to flash to an updated firmware you'll need to take it to the dealer, who may not charge you (mine doesn't). I don't know what year-model you have or what FW you have installed, but there have been at least four FW versions for the '07. I would pick the latest one for your year-model.
i had the same thing happen to me. in my case, the speedo reset switch had gone bad (contacts were sticking), so it thought that i was putting it in diagnostic mode. dealer replaced switch under warranty and it hasn't happened since.
