Default Speedo and idiot light question

Hello to everyone,

Here's my problem. Bought my '07 Softail Standard one month ago. Two weeks ago while riding home from work I looked down at the speedo and saw it drop from 65 down to zero, and stay there. The red "key" light was on, and then the orange engine light came on, then both went off, then came back and were joined by the battery light. Then the speedo would jump back to life, then go dead again and various combinations of the above mentioned lights would come and go. Took it back to the dealer, who diagnosed it as a loose battery cable. I did not make it home from the shop before the problem came back. Took it back the next day, this time they diagnosed it as a bad ECM, replaced it under warranty and sent me home. Next day, same problem again, except the speedo never stopped working. Various combinations of the idiot lights would come and go. Took it back to the service department again, and they have had it for a week now. Now they are telling me that they are not sure...and I'm not amused that this dealer has had the bike for almost two of the four weeks I have owned it.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm lucky to have two H-D dealers here in town, so I'm about ready to take it away from the dealer I purchased it from and go to the other shop. Since every bike I have owned prior to this one was not so completely computer-controlled, I'm at a bit of a loss.

Thanks for any advice.

It often pays to get a second opinion and to be blessed with an alternate service department in the neighborhood.

I've read about similar issues in other forums. There has been mention of bad sensors, loose connectors, etc., even bad speedos.

There was a service bulletin or recall earlier this year (Feb or March?) to better insulate the battery from a heavy weld in the oil tank - possible shorts, which may be a source of blown circuits. Ask your dealer tosee if that was handled on yours before you took delivery. I've had mine since August '06.

Let's ride,
DaBere

Dealer finally diagnosed a bad TSSM (turn signal module), replaced that under warranty, and sent me down the road. This time I asked them to keep it an extra day and put some more miles on it themselves, since the problem always seemed to come back within 20 or so miles. They put about 50 miles on it, and I have put another 30 or so myself with no problems. Hopefully those two modules will be the cure.

I asked the service manager about the battery box issues and any other service bulletins/recalls that might be an issue also; he insisted that my bike does not fall under any of that. We'll see.

Thanks for the suggestions. I appreciate the input.

So much for that...the problem came back on Monday night. I'm going to take to the other dealer in town and see if they can figure it out. I'm just about aggrivated out of my skin right now with this problem.

Do you have the HD security system installed? Any chance it could be related to the proximity function of the fob interacting with the ECM and immobiliser? The security system would be tied into all the systems you have mentioned.

that sounds crazy. i wonder if you could lemon law the bike..on the other hand, you probably don't want to go through the hassle of completing that process, you just want to ride a working bike. post the solution, you have piqued my interest
