You cancelled the day after you ordered? Nothing to re-stock so thats BS.
My dealer would make a fortune if they did this cause they dont stock *****. They even charge the shipping fee when you order. Needless to say, I buy nothing from this dealer.
I'd fight that if I was you, even if its a small amount just for general principal.
Did they tell you there policy before you gave them your $$$$ ??? It's ther way some HD shops do business. But I would think there should be some give & take!!!
Looks like I am calling them tomorrow. I am going to talk to the parts guy that knows me by name. He knows I have bought a lot over the years from them (including a bike) and I will see if he will hit me with the 20%. I am wondering if the person I talked to today just gave me a standard answer. We will see... The amount is not much its just the principle. They never stock **** and they always want you to pay upfront before the order. A dealer 20 miles away always has the items. I think I might be switching if tomorrow does not go well.
If the part hasn't hit the mail I can not see how they can justify the charge. However if the part has shipped from the supplier than they have a cost associated to send it back. Makes absolute good sense. Why do you think they have you prepay for it? It is worth the visit to discuss. Good luck, hope you get it worked out.
I'd say it's normal practice at most dealers. Didn't they tell you this when you ordered? Is it on your invoice? Is it on a sign behind the parts counter?
Given that you are a good customer, they should waive it but it really depends on what it is.
Even if the item hasn't shipped, a lot of times theres a hassle just to cancel the order. If I don't like a policy of a certain retailer, I'd just go shop elsewhere.
I bought the HD mid frame air deflectors for my last bike in december and then traded the bike in before I got to put them on (~50 days later) ... my dealer allowed me to swap for the correct ones for my new bike, all without a receipt. I can't stand the local sales guys but the parts/service folks are good people.
My local dealer has a strict 25% "restoring fee" Kind of bullshit when they don't stock enough common items. Then it takes seven to ten business days to get it. That's just ridiculous in the twenty-first century. But they also charge a few bucks more than the book price on items in stock, so I guess they're total dicks. Funny thing is, I like all the people who work there but I guess the management sucks.
I will be paying $200 in restocking fees on genuine HD parts thanks to my brother-in-law. It's my fault anyway, but that will never happen again. Lesson learned the hard way. Always ask questions and never assume
