I always have chaps on when it's on the cool side, they do help a lot to stay warm. From about the mid 60's and up they come off. As for how they look, I have no problem with that.

I did do long johns but it warmed up and tried to change out, it caused a commotion in the gas station parking lot.

For winter, I wear flannel lined jeans (Duluth) and chaps. I wear the fingerless gloves with gel pads in the palms to give my hands a rest. Leaves me with a VERY interesting tan line on my hands (the gloves have a hole in the back and holes over the knuckles.

I don't like fingerless gloves, but I wear chaps from 50s down to the 20s. They're better than long johns, leather pants etc. because if the weather warms up as the day goes on, you can hop off the bike and have 'em off in 10 seconds. My wife and I have it down to an art.

To me the fingerless gloves are useless. I have some thin leather driving gloves I like though.

Never, ever thought I would wear chaps. Broke down and bought them and now love 'em. I don't see the point in fingerless gloves, I always wear full ones. I have lighter weight ventilated ones for the warmer months.

It does get chilly some times on a long ride. I started with long johns, jeans and chaps. After riding through the snow (see my avatar), the water soaked through it all, boots too. Changed at a rest stop to dry socks and my heated bibs, nice and warm the rest of the way home.

You can always trailer the bike to warmer climates.
