Default That hurt

I was the lead bike in a group of three. I started turning right from a stop sign when the bike suddenly started to slide out from under me. In a half second, the bike was upright again and I was heading down the street I was turning on dragging my foot. I immediately pulled over into a parking lot to see how bad I was hurt and to actually try figure out what happened. I walked around a bit and even though my foot was sore, it didn’t feel broken. The leather on the top of my toe was scraped down pretty good however.

I was starting to question that big 180 Harley tire and my buddy behind me said he saw a piece of rubber fly out from my rear tire, so he check the tire for damage. The tire was OK. We could see that the bike went down to the footboard mount and that is how the bike swiveled around about 45 degrees to face down the street when it came back upright.

It took awhile to figure out what happened, but we think I must have run over the object in the road when I was leaning in the turn and my bike fell to the floor board mount. It still had enough speed to upright itself, but when the floorboard it the pavement, it threw my foot back and underneath the saddlebag.

The next few hours of riding was a non event except I was a little nervous making right turns. But when I got home and I took my boot off, my foot swelled a little. I didn't feel much pain at all, so helped my wife plant roses the rest of the day. But come about supper time, I couldn’t walk at all because the pain suddenly moved from my foot to my ankle and I was down for two days nursing that. Today my ankle feels pretty good but now my foot is sore.

All I can say is thank goodness for good riding boots. I think they save me from a broken foot and ankle. Even when my ankle was sprained, the boots supported it fine and there wasn’t any pain until I took them off. Once off, it swelled to much to put them back on. Of course I blame planting the roses.

Only damage to the bike is the bottom of the saddle bag, exhaust, and footboard mount have a nice scratch. Lucky for me a painter says Vivid Black is easy to match. Anybody have stock exhaust they want to get rid of?

Moral of the story is that its OK to ride in shorts with no helmet, but good riding boots are a must.

I went down a couple of years ago, so fast that I had no idea what caused it , while turning 90 degrees and approaching a stop sign......Turns out there was a flattened coke can there and when the contact patch on my front tire matched up on it the tire stopped rotating, and the front end went out......I have been more observant since, and see alot of them on the road.....

Interesting story. Glad it wasn't worse. As for footwear, I always wear steel toe boots. Job required anyways.

some of the issues I've had are the passenger pegs getting caught under my ankle a couple of times. Didn't break anything, but very painful and something I watch out for now.

Glad you are okay. I find myself having to bite my lip to keep from laughing whenever I see someone riding with shorts and flip-flops on.

I guess if you're afraid of turning right you could just turn left three times every time you need to go right. Just Kidding. Glad you're okay. Damn roses!

I caught my right ankle under the saddlebag guard last May and it took 8 months to fully heal. Hurt like a sumbitch!

That is not the moral of that story, but whatever helps you sleep at night.
