Go by the book. Get a service manual if you don't have one and you will find you can just do a lot of the work yourself and save a few bucks.

I picked up the 2011 Touring service manual yesterday because I plan to do my own service, and the scheduled maintenance chart shows the first service is at 1000 miles, then at 5000 miles, then every 5000 after that.

Now I tend to want to believe what is printed in the "official" HD service manual, and I can't help but wonder if the dealer is trying to gouge customers by getting them to pay for twice the amount of oil changes?

Changing oil at 2500 miles seems excessive to me, especially if using synthetic oils.

What should I go by - what's printed in the book or what the dealer told me?
You answered your own question. Like said, go by the manual....

What he said. And if you don't have time to do the maintenance yourself, find another, more trustworthy dealer. It's total BS.

For another take on it, when I bought my bike, I negotiated a lifetime service plan.

Since the dealer recommends every 2500 miles, you can bet your boots that I'll be taking it in for service every 2500 miles.

Have had the bike for five months and it's almost ready for its second service.

Cheers,

mike

First service is on 1000miles always, after that you can do every 5000miles with mineral oil … if you put SYN3 HD oil you can run 10.000miles. I am always chaining oil on 5000 and filter of course.

I did 1000, 3500 I changed out oil/filter, put full syn inside. 5000 due up soon, will do what manual says, and after that, every 5000.
