As others have said; make sure your radio is set up with all 4 speakers even. I wear a 3/4 helmet and unless I'm doing 80 up hill and the pipes are really loud it sounds fine. I have stock speakers. You could have a problem with your set up.
I did hear a speaker demo at the River Run last week from J & M and their speakers are for sure louder and more clear than the stock units. Probably a good way to go.
I have an 06 Ultra. That year HD introduced the Harmon Kardon 80watt system. The AVC is most of your issue. I hear mine fine and I like the rest wear a half helmet. Tune all your speakers equally and the stereo sound is great at any speed. Just crank it up and ride.
Stock system is good with correct configuration but at high speed upgraded speakers don't distort as bad as stock ones. I also have J&M head set made specifically for Nolan 3/4 which even sounds better then upgraded speakers.
Earbuds plugged into the console with an adaptor!! You will hear all you want to hear that way!! If you go that route i suggest the klipsch image s4 earbuds they sound great with alot of bass which cheap earbuds dont have!!

Plug into the console? hmmm what type of an adapter? Well, I still have my Fatboy and with the radius exhaust, the EVO just purrs. Love that damn thing. But yes have to get use to the Ultra. A little heavier but the wife loves it as we did take it out for a few hours and she was impressed. No pain in her back like the Fatboy gave her and when the lady is happy, it makes my life a whole lot better. :-)
