I was headed out to lunch yesterday and went to start the bike. It kicked back and then the starter wouldn't turn the motor over. I thought great, another broken starter.
So after work I got a couple of buddies to help me push start it. I grabbed the clutch lever and it was free. I though Crap, what now?
I am going to take the parts to our engineering department on Monday and see if they have any ideas. In the meantime, does anybody have a 5 speed gearset laying around?
I bought a complete low mile gear set off ebay for less than the cost of a main shaft. Does anyone know if I can get the pulley nut off and the gear set out of the case without removing the bearing race?
I can borrow the socket for the pulley nut from a friend but he doesn't have the puller for the bearing.
Your talking the inner primary race? I believe you have to pull it first. I had to replace mine a few years ago because it "walked" away from the seal and caused a leak. I ended up cutting it off. Scored it with a dremel tool in a couple spots and chiseled it off but for you since your shaft is shot......cut clean thru it!
I started using the puller I borrowed from the shop, but I found it was easier to dremel it off like posted above. The puller's threads were not so hot and was slipping so I finished it off with the dremel.
I have a 5 speed gear set with almost 0 miles on it. It was replaced with a SE 6 speed gear set. It has the shift pawls, shift shaft, clutch pushrod, bearings, drum and everything ready to go and in perfect condition. The door is natural finish because in was in an Electra Glide standard but you can swap that out if you need. I can email you pics of everything if you're interested. Whats a fair price?
