After putting 72,000 miles on my 2008 FLHX I decided it was time to go through the bike and see what needed to be taken care of. It had developed some vibrations I didn’t like and I had made the mistake of letting a totally incompetent individual work the front end; he was supposed to install a custom front end but six weeks into a three day job I told him to put the stock front end back on the bike. I later found a couple of things that make me think he was setting me up for a major malfunction but that is another story.
Accordingly, last January I went out of service to have the following done:
Cylinders bored, heads port & polish
SE Forged Pistons
Woods 5 Camshaft
Lower Unit Service; Crank repaired, balanced & welded (Darkhorse)
SE Flywheel
Manual Compression Releases
SE Compensator
+ All the new parts that go along with a 103 inch build
(connecting rods, push rods, lifters, bearings, etc.)
Chrome Front End Kit
Progressive Drop in Fork Kit
Braded Brake & Clutch Cables
Oil Temp Gauge to replace Air Temp
All engine and transmission fasteners replaced W/ 12 point polished SS bolts
I picked up the bike during Bike week and 3,500 miles later I’m very pleased with the results. I met the builder during Biketober Fest when I had him install a Glide-Pro, he is in St. Cloud which was close enough to where I was staying and Jake (Glide-Pro) had recommended him. If anyone is looking for a very talented builder in the St. Cloud area PM me and I’ll give you his email address.
Sounds like a nice boatload of work ya had done there. The 7 speed pretty nice? Much of a diff between the 6 and 7 gears?
The Baker 7th gear is the same 1:1 ratio as the stock 6th gear. The taller lower gears (especially first) make a big difference in low end power and allowed me to set up the engine/exhaust for high end Tq without worrying about off the line pulling power. And it is much easier to be (and stay) in the power band at less than highway speeds.
The bearings in my stock transmission were shot and I was going to spend money to tear it apart and replace them with the same HD junk. I understand Baker is working on a rebuild kit for the 6 speed which would cure the problem for a lot less money but Im glad it wasnt available when I had my build done, the DD7 is a marvelous piece of engineering.
man that many miles on an 08? you sure ain't been letting no grass grow under it. congratulations on your new build. i also have an 08 streetglide, but i have only 16k miles on mine. i bet that dd7 is great. now quit goofing around, get out there and put some miles on it.
