Heat can be a killer. All the more with the lean conditions that these bikes are set up at. So I just installed one of these on my bike and a friends bike. Do a search here to see how these can cut the heat back in slow traffic.
Living in Las Vegas I regularly ride in temps well into the 100's. On the road my ambient temp gauge says its close to 120; which when the official temp at says its 112 I'm sure in the sun and on the asphalt it is. I've never had an issue. As someone said here; I think the bike will shut itself down if it gets too hot. Also; all the Vegas cops ride HD and although they have the 103 with oil coolers; they ride much harder and longer than probably any of us will.
Just like one person said, I think this heat issue is a rider problem more than it's an engine problem, and I agree. I might be able to take a little more heat being a retired fireman and living in Texas though.
I moved to Las Vegas area from Mt. Rainier Washington. I noticed the police motor units shut their oil cooler equipted bikes off at traffic stops and I do the same. No problems.
I'm in Bakersfield - Satan comes here when he's cold - and bought my RGU in August. In stock form, on a mild 107 degree afternoon, it would go into heat management at EVERY stop. Spontaneous combustion of my right pants leg seemed a realistic concern. So I changed over to a SE air cleaner, a V&H Pro Pipe Chrome, and a SERT. Hasn't been in heat management since, and my leg is much happier!
Lot of folks on this forum, has anyone ever actually experienced the ECM completely shutting down the engine because it got too hot(not the EITMS)? Can any of the smart electronics guys validate if that function is even programed, if so what temp does it occur? I can't find anything about it in the TTS manual, I would think for sure it would be there.
Got stuck in traffic on the way home from work yesterday. Temp was about 86F and humidity was high. I was afraid my Ultra was going to overheat so I crossed the median and took a longer way home. My question is, how much idling and stop and go can one of these engines take (96 ci) without getting too hot. My last touring bike was liquid cooled so that was something I never thought about. I don't get stuck in traffic often but when I do, I don't want to risk burning my engine up. Thanks,
